Wear and tear issues

Wear is one of the most common causes of reduced pump performance and unplanned downtime. Particularly when pumping abrasive media, such as sand, sludge, lime, minerals or other solid particles, pump components are constantly exposed to high mechanical stress.

During pumping, these particles move at high speed through the pump’s hydraulic system. Due to the constant impact and friction, components such as the impeller, the pump casing, wear plates and seals gradually wear down. This alters the pump’s original geometry, increases internal clearance and reduces hydraulic efficiency.

The first signs of wear are often a reduction in capacity, lower pressure build-up and higher energy consumption. As wear progresses, vibrations, leaks and, ultimately, pump failure may occur.

Our solutions for wear and tear issues

Wear-resistant pumps

SICcast

For the most demanding abrasive applications, we supply pumps made from SICcast, a mineral casting material with exceptional wear resistance, manufactured by Düchting.

Choosing the right material

Considering the fluid to be pumped

The service life of a pump depends entirely on choosing the right material. We provide advice based on the fluid to be pumped, ranging from cast iron for simple applications to duplex and super-duplex stainless steel for aggressive and corrosive fluids.

Carbonitriding

Surface hardening

Carbonitriding is used to surface-harden steel components such as impellers and wear rings, thereby significantly increasing their wear resistance and extending their service life.
